Carnevale in Sicily - 23 Jan 2009
People planning a villa holiday in Sicily this winter may like to time their trip to coincide with one of the island's biggest carnivals.
Running from February 7th to 24th, Carnevale is set to feature a range of entertainment such as concerts and colourful float processions, according to the organisers.
The opening ceremony, taking place on the Piazza Duomo (main square), will include parades, entertainers and folk bands from across Italy and the act of delivering the Keys to the City to the carnival king.
A show dedicated to lovers, a children's costume competition and processions of allegorical floats will also feature in the carnival's itinerary.
The history of the floats on Sicily goes back to 1601, when those attending the carnival traditionally threw vegetables and eggs at each other. Today, visitors are more likely to be hit with confetti or foam.
Food fans may also enjoy Sicilian cuisine, which includes cannoli deserts, an aubergine and caper salad called caponata and sfincione pizza.
