Discover the 'spectacular' architecture of Santa Cruz - 02 Dec 2008
Anyone taking a villa holiday in Tenerife may have trouble recognising the city of Santa Cruz, such is the transformation it has undergone in recent times.
According to Tenerife News, the city has "created a new image" and has plenty of impressive architecture to explore beginning at the airport, which was designed by Canary architects Antonio Corona, Arsenio Perez Amaral and Eustaquio Garcia Martinez.
The airport building has an impressive series of wooden arched beams that fan out over the main hall to create a light and airy space.
Santa Cruz city centre has also been revamped in recent years and holidaymakers returning to the island after a few seasons away may notice the newly pedestrianised areas and the renovated Plaza de Espana.
Work on a new arts centre is also currently underway and the city's parks and green spaces have also been transformed.
Located on the north-east coast of Tenerife, Santa Cruz is also the administrative centre of the western Canary Islands.
