Most visitors speed through the region of Veneto on their way to the fairytale city of Venice (see below) but this land in its own right is rich with old hill towns, stunning countryside and mountain scenes – a perfect base for a villa holiday in Veneto.
Shopping whilst on holiday in Veneto
You’ll find beautiful displays of Burano lace, jewellery, mirrors and Murano glassware in Venice. The streets leading to the Rialto Bridge are lined on both sides with great shops. In Venice, buying one of the fabulous carnival masks is a must. The oudoor market of Verona and the markets in the three central squares of Padua are also well worth a visit.
What to see and do on your villa holiday in Veneto
The seaport town of Chioggia is in many ways a miniature replica of Venice, with vast cathedral, fine palazzi and a warren of canals – indeed the only thing missing is the tourists. Further south from here you'll come to the beautiful sandy beach at Rosolina Mare, where a cool, luxurious pine forest makes a perfect spot for a swim and picnic, especially if you're travelling with children. Nature lovers and romantics will want to head just a bit further and experience the desolate beauty of the broad Po Delta.
Adria, a sleepy little river town that was an ancient Roman center. Now it marks the edge of the Veneto's famed villa territory.
Visit the delightful little hill towns of Monselice, Arquà Petrarca and Este, which has a 14th-century walled castle.
Padua is the second oldest university town in Europe and houses the Law School and the desk from which Galileo gave his lectures. One of the most richly decorated churches in all of Italy "Il Santo" should not be missed - Andrea Mantegna's monumental frescoes in the church of the Eremiti are breathtaking. Also, take a walk over to Prato della Valle, supposedly the largest piazza in all of Italy. The thermal baths at Abano Terme are also an attraction.
Cittadella and Marostica are other two fortress towns. Vineyards abound in the Marostica area, producing the famous Soave wine.
It's just a quick run north to Bassano del Grappa, home of the delicious and heady after-dinner spirits, and picturesque location of a wooden bridge built in the 16th century by Palladio. This is the gateway to the stunning Dolomites mountain range, where mountain climbers and alpine enthusiasts will find countless alpine villages strewn among the hills and valleys.
Verona's arena is an ancient Roman amphitheatre, traditionally reserved for opera.
Last but not least is Venice itself which almost defies description – its ample canals, churches and backstreets have been excessively photographed and exquisitely documented by writers and poets throughout the ages. Wondering the narrow streets on foot is a true delight and even during the heady tourist season it is possible to find quiet corners. From the bustle of the main streets and the Canal Grande, you can easily loose yourself in labyrinthine side streets with colourful markets and historic wonders. The Canal Grande is the grandest of regal boulevards – boasting no less than 100 palaces ranging from 12th to 18th centuries. It would take a lifetime to explore every ally and every work of art in Venice so take your time and loose yourself in this spectacular and ancient island republic.
