Valencia City is a vibrant centre with a pretty old quarter. Away from the often sprawling resorts of the coastal area and into the heart of Valencia you will find a different world: one of palm groves, castles and rugged mountains. Those that venture away from the lure of the Costas are welcomed by a quieter, and far more Spanish series of ancient hilltop towns and villages which owe their origins to the region’s Arab and Muslim settlers.

REGION ACTIVITIES
There are many outdoor activities that you can involve in while in Valencia. Try golf, water sports, marine excursions and many more!

RESORTS
Morella and Mirambel, in the north east corner of Valencia, are amongst the finest examples of medieval towns. Indeed fortified towns, castles and medieval hamlets are everywhere in Valencia making this the ideal destination for exploration – by car, on foot or by bicycle.

SHOPPING
One of Europe's largest markets and a masterpiece of modernist architecture, Valencia´s Mercado Central is a lively, colourful and welcoming place to do your shopping. Visit in the morning and you'll see an array of fresh produce attractively displayed in all the stalls. It opened in 1928 opposite La Lonja. It's a huge 8000 square metre expanse of steel and glass decorated with typically colourful Valencian ceramic tiles.

EATING OUT
After all that, probably you will get hungry, and you have the chance to try Spain's most famous food right where it was born: "Paella Valenciana". If you need a refreshment somewhen, try a drink called Horchata. It is made of the milk of a plant called Chufas (somewhat similar to rice) and is served ice cold.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO
Valencia's cathedral is worth a visit. Climb to the top of its tower for a great view of the sprawling city.
Well worth seeing are the three old bridges, Puente del Real, Puente de la Trinidad and Puente de Serranos, the latter with the Torres de Serranos (15th century towers).
At Plaza de Manises is located the Palacio de la Generalidad, a 15th century palace that today is used as seat of government. Of high interest are the wall-paintings in its Salon de las Cortes, Salón Dorado and Galería de Retratos de los Reyes de Valencia. Through the street Calle de Los Caballeros you arrive to the town-gate Torres de Quart and to Plaza del Mercado, the square where Valencia's probably best known monument, La Lonja , is located. This is the old stock-exchange building of 1483.
Barrio del Carmen represents Valencia's way of living, if you don't know this district you don't know the city. Here you'll find numerous shops, café-theaters, bars, restaurants, flower-stands, ... it is the center of everyday life and a unique scenery for the visitor.
A walk through El Ensanche (the more modern part of town inhabited mainly by bourgeoisie and officials) may give you an impression of today's Valencia.
Valencia is the land of flowers so walk through its beautiful and romantic parks and gardens or visit the exotic Botanical Garden.
The city is surrounded by a wide green belt of very fertile land, called "La Huerta". Very interesting are the traditional houses of the agricultural labourers, the so-called Barracas. A salt water lake called "La Albufera" is located at the South of "La Huerta". Here you may have some boating and visit romantical fishing villages, as the picturesque Palmar.

REGIONAL EVENTS
Valencia is perhaps best known for the spring festival of Las Fallas, one of Spain’s liveliest fiestas. Enourmous papier-mache sculptures of historical figures and celebrities form the centrepiece to a week of parties, fireworks, concerts and bullfights.
