Pais Vasco (Basque Country) Villas: Regional Information
|
|
|
The Basque country is unlike any other region of Spain with its unique traditions, customs, culture and language, the essence of which is best appreciated in the towns scattered over the countryside, and in the picturesque villages along the rugged coast.
In the rural areas of the region, native Basque culture still remains with their traditional fiestas and odd assortment of sports that express the energy and competitive spirit of the Basques. Sports range from grass-cutting and log-chopping through to caber-tossing and tug-of-war.
The best shopping to be had is...
In Bilbao, the main stores for clothing are found around Plaza Moyúa in the Ensanche along streets such as Calle Iparraguirre and Calle Rodríguez Arias. The Casco Viejo has dozens of smaller shops specializing in an endless variety of products from crafts to antiques. Basque txapelas (berets) are famous worldwide and make fine gifts.
Nightlife to enjoy
For relaxed bar-to-bar wining and dining in Bilbao, the action begins in such places as the Casco Viejo and, in the Ensanche, along Calle Licenciado Poza, where the fun continues until late at night.
Other top bar-hopping zones include Paseo del Arenal, Calle Ledesma, and Calle Elcano. Los Jardines de Albia, with the Café Iruña in the forefront, is also a hub for a variety of cafés, bars, and taverns.
If you are in San Sebastian at night head to the Parte Vieja where all the town's nightife entertainment takes place.
Eating out on your villa holiday in Pais Vasco
If you fancy a break from the dishes, step out and sample some of the local Basque cuisine, which is generally regarded as Spain’s finest. The traditional Basque cooking revolves around exquisite seafood and the local white wine called txakolí.
What to see and do
San Sebastian
The famous and beautiful seaside resort of San Sebastian is a sophisticated city of elegance and energy. Home of the greatest tapas in Spain, the Parte Vieja (Old Town) is the heart of San Sebastian and pulses with bars, restaurants and nightlife – it has the greatest concentration of bars per square metre anywhere in the world. With a stunning sandy white beach, crystal blue waters and surrounded by low hills, the town offers plenty for those after relaxation or activity. If surfing is your thing Zarautz hosts a round the World Surfing Championship every September. Mundaka has the legend of one of the world’s longest left-handers attracting surfers the world over.
Bilbao
Bilbao’s showpiece, the Guggenheim Museum of Contemporary Art, is more notable for its appearance than its contents. Designed by US architect Frank Gehry this fantastical, swirling structure houses a top-flight collection of contemporary art.
Pamplona
On 6 July, mayhem breaks loose as Spain’s best known bull festival, the Fiesta de San Fermin kick starts the city into a frenzy of drinking, havoc and bull running.
Pilgrimage Route
The Pilgrimage Route, Carmino de Santiago, winds through the Basque country passing a handful of charming villages, the picturesque town of Estrella and landscapes bursting with colour after the spring rains.
