Murcia Villas: Regional Information
|
One of the most fair-weather regions of Spain, Murcia is blessed with 315 days of sunshine a year and average temperature of 17 degrees Celsius. Wedged between the Valencia region and Andalucía, its only relief is the Costa Calida, the 250km of Mediterranean coastline with its spacious beaches and varied landscapes.
The interior of the Murcia Region is ideal for those in search of relaxation, nature, sport and good food. The mountains here are full of wild game and woodland, and crowned with castles, fortresses, hermitages and convents.
REGION ACTIVITIES
Adventure tourism is one of the great attractions offered by the Region of Murcia.
You can learn to sail and skin dive, explore sunken treasures, do a spot of fishing, take a mud bath and enjoy a tranquil swim in the unspoiled coves. The transparent waters of the Costa Calida make the Murcian coast one of the foremost places in the country for scuba diving and cave diving.
Parque Natural de Sierra Espuna is a paradise for climbing, hiking, mountain biking and horse-riding, while beach and sun-seekers may prefer the tepid waters of the Mar Menor lagoon, the largest natural pool in the world.
RESORTS
Murcia, located inland, is the capital of the region. It is known for its fine dining, the Old Quarter and its Salzillo Museum, devoted to the Murican sculptor Francisco Salzillo. You’ll also find the sumptuous 16th century Santa Maria cathedral, displaying many treasures inside and a spectacular view of the city from the top of the tower.
Cartagena is of great historical importance, especially evident if you visit its museums. It also has the region's most important port.
Lorca is a lovely inland city with a fabulous castle. Its largely Renaissance architectural heritage includes "a collegiate church and a castle declared to be National Monuments, nine parish churches, various convents, over 200 emblazoned houses, 100 palaces and hundreds of beautiful spots."
Also visit Lorca, the town of a Hundred Coats of Arms, and Caravaca, the Holy Town.
NIGHT LIFE
After the sun has set, a party atmosphere is guaranteed with a selection of live bars and clubs... There's something to suit everyone; it's just yours for the choosing.
The area with the most clubs is around the university campus in the capital.
BEACHES
Two seas on one coastline - the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean - impressive cliffs, heavenly beaches of endless white sand, lively ports and wild coves with crystal clear water, more than 3,000 hours of sun a year. This is the Costa Calida, the ideal place to spend some days relaxing both in winter and summer! From the fishing town of Aguilas to the white dunes of the beach of El Mojon in San Pedro del Pinatar, stretch kilometre after kilometre of beaches and deserted coves.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO
Of major touristical interest is of course the Mediterranean coast, Costa Calida ("the warm coast"), with beaches of fine sand. The salt-water lagoon Mar Menor and La Manga del Mar Menor offer great possibilities for water sports. The inland is almost desertic, and you may visit several towns which still preserve their medieval structures.
REGIONAL EVENTS
All year round, the region of Murcia plays host to a wide variety of musical, dance, theatrical and cultural events to suit all tastes - a great way to get to know a little more of Spanish culture.
From January to December festivals move between pageantry and participation: from the Spring Festival -culminating in the spectacular Burial of the Sardine- to the Romans and Carthaginians pageants and from the Moors and Christians and the smell of gunpowder and blunderbusses to the Wine Horses...The festivities of the Region of Murcia are full of spectacularity and profoundly felt sentiment.
