Munich has a courageous history – founded by Henry the Lion in 1158. It is the Bavarian Capital, and has a birthday on 14th June – amidst the opening rounds of the 2006 World Cup this year. This celebratory outlook will pervade the city as a whole as it makes the most of its World Cup venue status. The city sits on the banks of the river Isar, and has become an undisputed international centre for culture, commerce and media. It has climbed to this position, having reinvented itself with energy and determination after suffering much destruction during the Second World War. This World Cup venue is also an international centre for sport – its famous Olympiastadion has hosted such events as the 1997 Champions League final, and the 1974 World Cup final.
Bayern Munich is Munich’s most famous football club contender, with a string of national and European titles to show for its outstanding performance. The city’s stadium, that will be the 2006 World Cup venue in Munich, hosts many other sporting events also – such as major cycling tournaments, and international track and field events. The 66,000 capacity stadium sports some incredible design innovations, including light-up ‘lozenge’ shaped ‘cushions’ that glow in different colours to give the whole place a beautiful and magical aspect! These are made from inflated foil panels that can each be separately illuminated in white, blue or red to create this amazing visual effect.
Munich is a 2006 World Cup venue that will delight fans in many different ways – one of our holiday accommodation properties available in or around the city will provide a perfect base to take part in Munich’s World Cup party.
