Regional Information for Villa Holidays in Malta
Just south of Sicily, the Maltese archipelago languishes in the clear warm waters of the Mediterranean. Malta is the largest of the three islands that make up the group, but is still only 30km from end to end and easy to explore on a week’s holiday. A stay in an Igluvilla provides you with a perfect base from which to explore this beautiful island.
It’s advantageous geographical position between the European and African continents, has meant that the landscape and people are marked by a wonderful mixture of cultural and historical influences. For those of you with an appetite for culture, Malta and Gozo are strewn with fascinating historical and archaeological sites, some of which date back earlier than the Pyramids!
Although hotly contested by the likes of the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs, it was the Knights of the Order of St. John however, who left the most enduring impact on the island.
Places to visit while on your Villa Holiday in Malta
Valletta, the capital, is testimony to the determination of the Knights to protect the island from the outside world and Valletta Grand Harbour must be one of the most dramatic sights in the Mediterranean. Re-enactments are regularly staged to allow visitors to be swept back in time to the days of the Crusades. Today it's a beautifully preserved 16th-century walled city, small enough to cover in a few hours. From the City Gate at the southwest edge of Valletta, you can walk to the centre of town through a series of squares surrounded by palaces and cathedrals.
Mdina, the former capital of Malta, is filled with Norman and baroque buildings and narrow cobblestone streets. Perched on a rocky outcrop about 15km (9mi) west of Valletta, the so-called Citta Notabile - Noble City - has a commanding view of the island. Its nickname derives from the many aristocratic Maltese families who still live in town. The best-preserved medieval building is the Norman-style Palazzo Falzon, built in 1495.
Hagar Qim and the other Neolithic temples on Malta are the oldest known human structures in the world. This megalithic temple complex is adorned with carved animals and idols, sacrificial altars and oracular chambers, all executed with nothing more than flint and rough tools.
