Madrid is a city more to be lived than to be seen; its a fun-loving city where life is lived to the fullest and its energy pulses through the streets. On weekends it is very possible to continue your ‘night’ well into the day.
The capital of Spain since 1562, Madrid is a modern city with a population of about 3 million people. It is a city designed for walking with all its museums, galleries, beautiful parks, palaces and avenues. Street life is Madrid's trademark; stroll through the evocative cobbled streets of Old Madrid or window-shop in the sleek new districts.
RESORTS
Outside of the capital, you’ll find rural Madrid with its charming villages and monumental retreats, such as the majestic San Lorenzo de el Escorial palace and monastery, Alcalá de Henares, a 16th century university town and Aranjuez where the royal court once summered.
SHOPPING
Shop around the streets of Almirante and Conde de Xiquena, as well as in the district of Salamanca which concentrates the best shops for jewelry, shoes, leather goods, furniture and gifts. Around the Plaza Mayor you will find shops selling traditional articles. Everything imaginable can be found in the Rastro, the most famous of the flea markets open on Saturdays and Sundays between the Plaza de Cascorro, La Latina and the street of Embajadores. Here you can look for valuable antiques, used clothing, collector cards, books, records and paintings.
NIGHTLIFE
Find a large number of popular bars, pubs, fast food restaurants and ice cream parlors in the areas of the Plaza de Santa Bárbara, the Glorieta de Bilbao and Alonso Martínez. Night spots in Arguelles and Moncloa are popular among University students and a younger crowd. Malasaña has countless bars with live music and reasonable-priced restaurants. The nightlife of Madrid also thrives in Paseo de la Castellana, Paseo de Recoletos, Paseo del Prado and Parque del Oeste.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO
You could spend several days just seeing Madrid's world-renowned museums and galleries, among them the world renowned Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía. After a heavy round of the art galleries, a stroll in Madrid’s loveliest public gardens, once the preserves of kings and queens, is a great way to end the day or enjoy the weekend.
EATING OUT
Restaurants, snack bars and fast-food outlets are everywhere in Madrid. The tapas tradition is alive and well, and bar hopping is a fantastic way to enjoy Madrid's energetic spirit; going for a beer and a few bar snacks is a ritual not to be missed. If you want to try the most typical dish order the 'Cocido Madrileño', a stew combining chickpeas with vegetables and chicken, beef and pork.
REGIONAL EVENTS
Madrid has several festivals and celebrations. The most important are the Carnival culminating on Ash Wednesday with the traditional burial of the Sardine and the Fiestas del 2 de Mayo with concerts, open-air dancing, sporting events and bullfights. From the 6th to the 15th August, the Fiestas de San Lorenzo, San Cayetano and the Virgen de la Paloma are commemorated with processions.
SPORT DESCRIPTION
The countryside around the city of Madrid is also an escape from the big-city stress, where visitors can relax and enjoy life at a slower pace and where outdoor activities abound. There’s rock climbing in the Pedriza park; mountain biking and hiking around the town of Cercedilla; and walking and skiing in northern Guadarrama.
