Regional information for Villa holidays in Lombardy
Located in northern Italy, stretching over the Alps, plains and lakes, Lombardy's scenery is varied and sometimes dramatic. The flat area around Milan is dotted with art cities, but for a glimpse of natural splendours, head for the edge of the mountains. Here the Alps tumble down into steep valleys and lakes, in a scenic feast which has enraptured travellers for centuries. Staying on an Iglu villa holiday in Lombardy will provide the perfect base from which to explore this wonderful region.
What to see and do on villa holidays in Lombardy
The Lakes form Italy's prettiest region, where vast, silver-blue expanses of water are lined with bustling little towns whose ochre, beige and terracotta buildings meander up the foothills of the towering Alps. This is a traveller’s paradise and Lake Como, a bustling textile-manufacturing centre, has something for everyone. Its cathedral is one of the best examples of the Renaissance in northern Italy and its streets buzz with antiques markets and bric-a-brac stalls. Visit any of the tiny waterside villages and you will soon fall under the lake’s spell. But before leaving Como, be sure to take the funivia up to Brunate for a truly spectacular view. If you're a hiker, take the footpath up to Monte Boletto.
Nearby Lake Maggiore, the largest and most captivating of all the lakes, is ringed with popular resorts and pretty towns. Its three islands are Isola Bella, site of the wildly extravagant Borromeo villa and gardens; Isola dei Pescatori, home of a working fishing village; and Isola Madre, with semi-tropical gardens and a simple villa. A steamer excursion on either of these lakes is spectacular, as the Italians have known since ancient Roman days.
Lake Garda is perhaps the most popular and is a good base for walking, cycling and trekking. The pretty resorts of Sirmione and Gardone Riviera are worth a visit.
