Loire Valley Villas
Regional information for villa holidays in the Loire Valley
The Loire Valley is an outstanding cultural landscape of great beauty, containing historic towns and villages, great architectural monuments, breathtaking châteaux, and delicious fine wines.
What to see and do whilst holidaying in your villa in the Loire Valley
The Loire Valley is really well known for its châteaux, numbering more than three hundred, and the building of these magnificent dwellings date back to the 10th century. When the French kings began constructing their huge châteaux here, the nobility, not wanting or even daring to be far from the seat of power, followed suit. Their presence in the lush, fertile valley with its moderate climate, began attracting the very best landscape designers.
The Loire Valley continued to be the place where most of the French royalty and the wealthy bourgeoisie preferred to spend the bulk of their time. However the French Revolution saw a number of the great French châteaux destroyed and many were ransacked with their treasures stolen. During World War I and World War II, some chateaux were commandeered as military headquarters. Some of these continued to be used this way after the end of WWII.
Today, these privately owned châteaux serve as homes, a few opening their doors to tourist visits, while others are operated as hotels or bed and breakfasts. Many serve as major tourist sites, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The Chateau at Azay le Rideau with its majestic standing makes for a perfect outing from your villa in the Loire Valley.
Shopping whilst on holiday in your Loire Valley villa
The Loire Valley is a region bursting with markets of all descriptions and a villa holiday in the Loire would not be the same without sampling the fresh produce on offer on these eye catching stalls selling local delicacies and stunning flowers. Markets are held throughout the region everyday of the week and the produce on offer includes fresh fruit and vegetables, crafts, cakes, honey and cheeses, all accompanied by street entertainment and music to provide an unforgettable atmosphere.
Nightlife in the Loire Valley
The Loire is not a region overflowing with bars and nightclubs, however the University towns of Angers and Tours are the liveliest towns in the Loire Valley and have a great selection of cafés, bars, jazz clubs and nightclubs that will keep you entertained until the early hours of the morning.
A holiday in a villa in the Loire Valley provides a great base from which to enjoy the fantastic range of cultural entertainment on offer, including wonderful shows such as the Son et Lumiere which are usually held on summer evenings in a variety of Loire towns. These performances, normally held in romantic, historic buildings depict the regions or Chateau’s history through a colourful array of dancing, acting or music.
