The romantic city of Paris is easily accessible from all other départements, and is where anyone can enjoy the excitement and the hustle and bustle of this historical and cultural centre. Its famous sights are magnificent, its museums fascinating, its boutiques exclusive and its restaurants congenial.
The surrounding départments are rich in history, frequented by many church and noble men over the centuries, and their lush landscapes dotted with châteaux, mansions and rivers.
The most well-known of the Seine-et-Marne châteaux is at Fontainebleau. Thirty-two kings have stayed there in the past and have added their mark through the centuries. Today the châteaux is open for everyone to gaze at its collections of paintings and sumptuous period furniture. Its gardens are grand and the vast forest at Fontainebleau, once a royal hunting ground, is now a haven for more peaceful pastimes. Seine-et-Marne boasts some picturesque towns including Provins, located in the heart of Brie country with canals, narrow streets, town houses and gardens, and Meaux with its episcopal palace and cathedral.
South of Paris, Essonne is well placed for visiting many of the attractions of Ile-De-France. Essonne itself is a département of wide open spaces and sprawling woodland. With a heritage going back centuries, Essonne boasts many architectural reminders of the past with its numerous châteaux and country houses, and historical towns with their museums.
