Made up of some of the last areas to join the Italian state, Fruili marks the front line between the three great European cultural groups; it is here that for centuries, the Latin, Slav and Germanic worlds have clashed.
You can mix urban culture with nature in Fruili by heading for historical and cultural towns, the Adriatic beaches, the northern ski slopes or the forest walking trails.
NIGHTLIFE
Lignano Sabbiadoro is one of the most famous Italian resorts for its nightlife...You can glide across the dance floors, hire a rickshaw on the seafront or seat back and enjoy the live music. If you are in Trieste, most bars and nightspots are found east down the Riva.
EATING OUT
Friulian cuisine has been influenced by many cultures, gnocchi is very popular, as are polenta and bolliti (boiled meats). One typical dish you’ll find is brovada - turnips fermented with the dregs of pressed grapes. Wines from the eastern hills of Friuli are considered the regions best. So stop at one of the great local restaurants to try them yourself.
BEACHES
Friuli's stretch of coast offers beaches and lagoons, huge rock cliffs picking over the sea, inlets and harbours. Lignano Sabbiadoro is a very popular destination among Italians. It has 8km of sandy beaches, amusement parks and sports fields. Grado is another well known resort. It boasts a beautiful beachfront and a unique historical centre surrounded by the lagoon...
WHAT TO SEE AND DO
Trieste
Trieste is situated on the gulf of the same name, sitting snugly between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia. A great southern port for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it is where East meets West and is a great place to end an Italian tour and embark on a foray into Eastern Europe. It preserves interesting Roman, Medieval and neo-classical monuments and is an important centre for artistic, historic and scientific collections. Reminders of the old days are the characteristic cafés and the French quarter.
Aquileia
Founded in 181BC, Aquileia was once the fourth city of the Roman Empire. A rich and famous archaeological centre, scattered remnants of the Roman town still remain and are best seen in the extraordinary Romanesque basilica.
Cividale del Fruili
One of the most picturesque towns in the region, Julius Caesar founded the town in 50BC. In the 6th century it became the seat of the first Lombard duchy, whose influence you can find all around the town.
SPORTS
Heading up to Austria, in the Carnia Alps, the Fruilian lowlands give rise to Alpine country where the region’s prime attractions are walking, hiking and skiing.
