Extremadura Villas: Regional Information
|
Extremadura borders Portugal, Andalucia and Castile and is one of the most unspoiled regions of Spain, with its mighty rivers, wild and desolate mountain ranges, rolling plains and beautiful cities. It’s not completely without tourists but it’s off the beaten track enough to give you a genuine sense of exploration.
Extremadura can be very hot in high summer and bitingly chilly in winter. Climatically, the best times to visit are the second half of April, May, September and the first half of October.
Extremadura is an indisputably beautiful area, and at certain times of the year you’ll find simply stunning landscapes; like times when the valley of La Vera fills with cherry blossoms in spring. But there is much more to Extremadura than scenic beauty.
RESORTS
Northern Extremadura
The stunning landscapes and lush green valleys of the far north are dotted with medieval villages and you’ll also find some excellent walking routes and exploring in the area.
Caceres
A pleasant and lively place with a large student population, Caceres is Extremadura’s second biggest city and has one of the most impressive concentrations of medieval stonemasonry in Europe. At it’s centre lies an old town that has changed so little since the 15th and 16th centuries that it’s often used as a film set.
Trujillo
As you drive into the town of Trujillo, often described as ‘one of the most perfect towns in Spain’ you can imagine that you’ve driven through a time warp into the 16th century. It’s an amazingly preserved old town, that’s crowded with aged buildings that exude history.
Merida
Merida preserves some of Spain’s finest and outstanding Roman monuments, including a colossal theate,e amphitheatre, bridge aqueducts, and the Museum of Roman Art with its invaluable collection.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO
The region itself has given rise to many an epic 16th century conquistador of the Americas, crediting Extremadura with the title ‘Cradle of Conquistadors’. The Romans also left many traces of their passage through this region -majestic bridges and the world renowned spectacular Roman remains of Mérida.
REGIONAL EVENTS
From May to late June you could have a fantastic time touring all the main towns’ major fiestas.
