Borussia Dortmund is Dortmund’s leading football team and winner of both the UEFA champions league and cup in 1997. The city’s strong sporting emphasis is focused especially on football, and evident in the popularity of the sport amongst its inhabitants. As a 2006 World Cup venue, the city is looking to prove itself as a top class international football community, carrying on a theme that was exhibited when Dortmund hosted the 2001 UEFA cup final. The city of Gelsenkirchen has poured resources into making the venue more easily accessible to visitors on every level – buildings, accommodation, transport links and roads have all been modernised to a very high standard. It is embracing its World Cup 2006 venue status with gusto – it is certainly a football-mad city. Dortmund’s stadium, the Westfalenstadion, was originally built for the 1974 World Cup – and sees this great tournament returning in 2006. Bright yellow support pylons, each rising to a height of 62 metres, are a distinctive feature of the impressive stadium, and have become a proud landmark in the city. Gelsenkirchen boasts many buildings of great architectural note, and for which it is historically famed. Its stadium is a model of modern design, with a retractable roof, a removable playing surface and a giant video cube. The Champions League Final was played here on 27 May 2004.
