Regional Information for Villa Holidays on the Costa de Almeria

This easternmost province of Andalucía is one of the warmest and driest regions in Spain and is characterised by its strikingly stark landscapes that greet the coast in majestic fashion – forming excellent beaches, rocky headlands and sandy coves. Surprisingly this harsh land is home to an astonishing variety of wildflowers, grasses, shrubs and desert plants, many of which are protected by the natural park status of much of this coastline.A Stay in an Igluvilla provides you with the perfect base from which to explore this wonderful region.

Resorts

Agua Amarga is one gem of a place, a typical whitewashed Andalucían village, located right beside a superb, sandy beach, framed on both sides by imposing, sandstone headlands. Relaxed restaurants, shops and narrow backstreets make this a snapshot of a Spanish fishing community.
The city of Almeria is located at the foot of a mountain range which is crowned by the magnificent Alcazaba, an Arab fortress with three huge walled enclosures. La Almedina district offers typical narrow Moorish streets and peaceful squares close to the Cathedral.
To the east of Almeria we find the rugged and desolate coast of the Cabo del Gato-Nijar natural park. West of Almeria is the highly developed tourist resorts of Roquetas de Mar and Aqua Dulce. At the north of the Costa de Almeria is the naturist beaches of Vera. A little further south is Mojacar which successfully combines the popular beach holiday with the hillside white village that tourists love to explore. To the west we find the developing complex of Almerimar with Marinas, golf and many other facilities.

Shopping

The cost of everyday goods in the Almeria area is much cheaper than in both the UK and the Spanish resorts. Almeria city has a wide range of shops to meet all needs. To make life easy, try the 'Mediterraneo' complex, which also houses the Alcampo hypermarket.

Nightlife to enjoy

Costa de Almeria offers the quietest nightlife of any part of Mediterranean Spain, being mainly based around laid-back cafes, bars and restaurants.

Eating out

The local dishes tend to be fish-based, especially paella and tapas. Specialities include Gurullos (stew with pasta), and Escabeche e Sardines (fresh sardines in hot sauce). So try these traditional dishes at the local restaurants.

Beaches to enjoy

The Costa de Almería has benefited from its reputation as "Spain's forgotten coast” and today can boast some of Spain’s most dramatic and least crowded beaches.

What to see and do

Almost the entire coast between Almería and Mojácar is covered by the Cabo de Gata National Park, an extensive area of sand dunes, wetlands and salt marshes that serve as a habitat for some eighty species of breeding birds and migrants, including pink flamingos, avocets and storks.
Back in the 60's and 70's, the area around Tabernas was used extensively for scenes from some of Hollywood's greatest adventure films such as 'Lawrence of Arabia', 'El Cid' and, most famously, the Clint Eastwood 'spaghetti westerns'. There are 3 main sights which have been preserved and are open to the public.
Also visit Granada's Moorish Alhambra Palace.
