Besides from several million bottles of fizzy white wine, the regions of Champagne and the Ardennes have plenty of attractions to offer the visitor - the wonderful city of Reims and its vast gothic cathedral among them.
From the vast Ardenne forests in the north, you can drive south across great open spaces and cereal plains, through vineyards and verdant wooded valleys, down to the land of springs. Wherever you go, you will find not only unforgettable landscapes but also a rich and varied gastronomy. In addition to the celebrated Champagne, look out for dishes based on game (young wild boar, venison) or fish (trout or pike).
What to see and do on your villa holiday in the Champagne and Ardennes Region of France
Tasting tours at this region’s many cellars, maisons and vineyards is a favourite pass-time for visitors to the region. Champagne-Ardenne has dozens of outlets for sports and activities that will restore even the fuzziest head to bright clarity.
You can take a sailing course on any of a dozen lakes, especially at the Lac Der-Chantecoq and at the linked Lakes of Foret d’Orient, one of the region’s largest national parks. Watersports centres there offer dinghy sailing, catamarans, windsurfers and waterskiing. The lakes are often stocked with carp and pike, while the rivers of the Haute-Marne département harbour the wilier trout.
On dry land, the region has more than 5000km of marked paths, suitable for walkers and cyclists with mountain-bikes; the road-based wine routes are easy to follow with touring cycles. It is also possible to tour the vineyards on horseback, and several equestrian centres plan rides through the region, but the view of the vines is best of all from hot air balloon!
