The Summer University and the annual International Festival are worth a visit. Other attractions around are the church of Santa Maria de Valverde, or the natural safari park of Cabarcena.
A few kilometres from the capital lie the medieval town Santillana del Mar, and the fascinating prehistorical Caves of Altamira.
Other sites of historic interest range from the caves of Candamo to Romanesque chapels and 15th century towers. Medieval towns such as Comillas in Cantabria, and Llanes and Villaviciosa in Asturias are also a must see.

Spain in general is known for having good leather. Santander plays host to many show stores offering high quality shoes at amazing prices. The main shopping area is in downtown, around the Townhall.
