Calabria is surrounded by the sea on three sides and is characterised by the stacked massif of Aspromonte. The landscape in the hinterland is mountainous, covered with forests where small villages are nestled. The coast offers good infrastructure with modern holiday facilities and lively and pleasant bathing resorts.
SHOPPING
Find yourself and your friends a souvenir from one of the flea markets of Calabria, including Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valencia. You'll find anything for ceramics and hand-made linens to antiques.
NIGHTLIFE
In the centre of Reggio Calabria, stroll along the seafront promenade and explore the spectacular amphitheatre, Porto Salvo Wharf and Athena statue. What a fantastic scenery! Then hit the clubs, pubs and restaurants in the nearby beachside area, the heart of Calabria's nightlife.
EATING OUT
The food of Calabria is simple: pastas and vegetables, complemented by olive oil and sausages. You also find these ingredients in hearty soups. Also try the frittata, an open-faced omelette where the fillings are cooked inside. Visit one of the local restaurant to savour the local delicious food yourself.
BEACHES
Head to the promontory that stretches from the Golfo di S. Eufemia to the Golfo di Gioia. You will see a fantastic scenery. Between Tropea and Nicotera, especially in the areas around Parghelia and Capo Vaticano, find a number of beautiful beaches and interesting rocky coves, creating a fascinating coastline. The water here is extremely clear.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO
Enjoy the marvellous views across rugged mountains, golden wheat fields and sapphire blue seas. Stroll through olive trees or admire the ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Norman ruins. Calabria is home to rare archeological pieces from the Magna Grecia area like the famous Bronzes of Riace. Meet the welcoming and friendly local people...you will notice that some villagers still wear traditional costumes. If you venture into the mountains, you will see numerous fountains with natural mineral water. Cosenza is the largest city in Calabria and boasts an illustrious university and many fine aristocratic buildings. Even though it's the capital of the region, Cosenza is very provincial. From here you can easily get to La Sila, one of Europe's great forest wonderlands. Then head to Caccuri, a dramatic hill town built around a restored castle.
REGIONAL EVENTS
Calabria hosts many regional events. Here's a list of the main ones:
Bagnara: Swordfish Festival (July)
Lido di Palmi: Maritime Procession of the Madonna (August)
Villaggio Mancuso: Calabrian Folklore Festival (September).
SPORTS
In summer you'll find many opportunities for hiking. For example, you can try the 3-mile climb up Mount Botte Donato for stunning views of both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. In winter the mountain area is one of Italy's best cross-country skiing areas.
