Asturias Villas: Regional Information
|
One of the last parts of Spain to be touched by tourism, Asturias and neighbouring Cantabria are areas of breathtaking natural beauty and are a world apart from conventional preconceptions of Spain.
Wooded mountains and steep-sided valleys meet the Atlantic Ocean as sandy coves, dotted with pretty fishing villages. Strictly controlled development along the coast means that the rural hamlets and local culture is little changed since Medieval times.
Resorts
Medieval towns such as Llanes and Villaviciosa are a must see. However, the major cities of the region are:
Oviedo
The region's capital, located more or less at its geographical center, is specially remarkable for its pre-romanic monuments and its great cathedral.
Gijon
This historic city, founded already by Romans, is today one of the most important sea-ports and offers active cultural life.
Aviles
Aviles, one of the oldest settlements of the Cantabric area, is of high economical importance too, but conserves as well its traditional style.
Shopping
If you want to shop at exclusive boutiques and stores, calle Uria is the place to go in Oviedo. It is also where el Corte Ingles is located. Also somewhere on calle Uria is an amazing ice-cream (helados) stand with all kinds of flavors.
Eating out
This blend of mountain and sea has endowed the region with sumptuous cuisine: hake, sea bream and octopus from the ocean, salmon and trout form the rivers and cheeses from the hills – not to mention the local cider – will give you just a taste of this diverse and verdant wonderland. So try the delicious food of Asturias in the local restaurants!
Beaches
Asturias' coast has great beaches like Playa Xago and Cobijeru Beach. The first one is a hidden gem and quite remote. A large sandy beach that can only be reached by foot. The beach is backed by a high mountain, so for the energetic it's worth climbing for the view from the top. The latter is one of those wild beaches reached on foot. Get to Buelna and walk along the cliffs. Surrounded by steep cliffs, but a delightful hidden heaven. Great for diving and snorkelling to the coves, inlets and islets.
What to see and do
Sites of historic interest range from the Neolithic cave paintings of Altamira and Candamo to Romanesque chapels and 15th century towers.
In Asturias you find some outstanding natural preserves such as Picos de Europa in the Cordillera Cantabrica and the national parks of Covadonga and Somiedo.
Major attractions are the Way of Santiago with its numberless monuments and the Ruta de la Plata, "silver route", which both lead through Asturias.
But there is more to see in Asturias...For example, the Cathedral - Plaza de Alfonso II el Casto. This Cathedral in the capital, Oviedo is a good example of 14th and 15th century Gothic style, or Museo Arqueologico - Calle San Vicente 5. Also in the capital and a great place to learn about Asturias past.
Other sightseeing places include Santa María del Naranco - Great palace overlooking Oviedo on Monte Naranco. The Palace has a colourful history and magnificent views of the town and mountains beyond. A worthwhile trip to see a good example of pre-Romanesque architecture.
