Apulia, (also known as Puglia), is a region in southeastern Italy bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, and the Strait of Otranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south. The region offers a number of cathedrals dating back to the 10th century, Greek and Roman ruins, beautiful working fishing villages dotted along the coast, one of Europe's largest forests, medieval hilltowns, and beautiful clean beaches and waters. A stay on a villa holiday in Puglia gives you a fantastic base from which to explore this remarkable part of the country.

Shopping whilst on your Puglia Villas Holiday
There are various handcrafts and antique markets in Apulia. If you are looking for some typical Pugliese artefacts, Grumo Apulla or Alberobello are ideal markets and are both held in August. The market of Gallipoli (on the first Sunday of the month) and the one in Copertino (September 10-20) are excellent places to buy antiques.
In Alberobello many of the local shops are in Trulli, giving you an opportunity to enter and see what 'trulli' are really like. Here you can find great wine, oil and food products as well as special pugliese items that would make perfect souvenirs.

Your Puglia Villas holiday and nightlife
Because of the large student population in it's University, Lecce is usually great for a night out. Locals head to the main piazza for a drink with friends.
Piazzetta del Duca d'Atena is also very popular among locals. Via Giusti is where you can find some of the best clubs of the city.
Cisternino has a vibrant open-air cafe nightlife in the summer. The capital Bari has one of the major nightlife districts of the region.

Eating out on your Puglia Villas holiday
Pugliese cuisine is based on olive oil, one of the great products of the region. When you visit a pugliese restaurant, try some of the local treats, including 'orecchiette' (ear shaped pasta) with fantastic sauces, or sundried vegetables, or 'lampascioni' (an onion like root that grows exclusively in this area)...and don't miss out on the local red and rose wines like San Severo, Copertino and Squinzano.
When you feel like having a snack back at your villa in Puglia, 'Taralli' (round breadsticks) are incredible!

What to see and do on your villas holiday in Puglia
If you like cathedrals and palaces, start in the heart of Andria at the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. From there you can visit the Palazzo Ceci, chiesa di S. Francesco, Palazzo Vescovile, chiesa di S. Agostino and the Castel del Monte. In Brindisi you can see the Aragonese and Svevo castles, the sailor monument and the Tancredi fountain. In Foggia, start with the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino and then through the various monuments of the city until you end up at the Chiesa delle Croci.
But the one attraction that you will only see in Apulia is 'I Trulli'. These are whitewashed cones made of stones held together without mortar. You can see them in many wheat fields and olive groves, where they are used as miniature barns. The most picturesque Trulli sight is in Alberobello, where they are clustered together in the hundreds, to form a town.

Regional events whilst on your Puglia Villas holiday
Among the many events of the region is the great Carnevale Dauno. This is an annual carnival held in Manfredonia. From December to 28 February, don't miss the Putignano Carnival (near Bari) with its famous parade of papier-mache floats. This is the longest and one of the oldest carnivals in the world. There are also many great food festivals and art and music festivals in the region throughout the year.
