The smallest of the Italian regions and also one of the wealthiest, Valle d’Aosta is entirely mountainous and surrounded by some of Europe’s best known peaks – Mount Blanc, The Matterhorn, The Monte Rosa and the Gran Paradiso. The Aosta Valley borders France and Switzerland and officially recognises both the Italian and French language.

SHOPPING
The local people have developed a real talent for woodwork and specialise in making 'grolle', bowls, plates, furniture, barrels and clogs. Other specialities include wickerwork, stonework, lace and ironwork. So buy one of these handcrafts as a souvenir for yourself or your friends at home.

NIGHTLIFE
Courmayeur offers general entertainment and the town of St Vincent is well known for its casino, restaurants, clubs and busy nightlife.

EATING OUT
The cuisine makes liberal use of the local cheese. Traditional dishes include a thick soup of cabbage, bread, beef broth and Fontina and a dish traditionally made with the meat of the Chamois. So try the delicious local food in one of the great restaurants.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO
The valley is an important passageway through the Alps and is lined with castles, many of them Romanesque and Gothic, just waiting to be explored. Each castle is within view of the next, as messages used to be flagged along the valley.

Places to visit include:
Courmayeur
One of the most picturesque of the skiing resorts in the Aosta Valley, Courmayeur is set against the backdrop of Mont Blanc with much of the original village remaining intact.
Gran Paradiso National Park
Established in 1922, The Gran Paradiso was Italy’s first national park and is mainly devoted to summer activities with numerous well marked walking trails.
Gressoney
Gressoney is a pretty lakeside mountain village that has retained its traditional atmosphere. The Monte Rosa mountains dominate the area which is great for walking.

REGIONAL EVENTS
If you like festivals, join the fun in a week of music and traditional folklore, where you can listen to traditional music and see some historical costumes, or taste the delicious food in one of the many gastronomical festivals.

SPORTS
One of Europe’s premier ski resorts, its resort towns, lakes and valleys offer a feast of year-round activities. There is plenty of good skiing, hiking, hang-gliding, canoeing, horse riding and mountain climbing.
