Although tiny, just 25km from north to south, and 29km from east to west, Andorra is nestled in the Pyrenees and is surrounded by mountainous landscapes, meandering rivers and some of the most dramatic scenery in the area.
A visit to Andorra is essential for all those keen on sports. You’ll find trout fishing in the lakes and rivers; rock climbing; mountain bike riding; trekking; guided walks; horse riding; white water canoeing, hiking and the best skiing in the Pyrenees.
The tranquillity of Andorra’s unspoiled backcountry starts just a few hundred metres from the bustle of the small towns and the northwest especially has good hiking with more than 50 lakes lying hidden among the soaring mountains.
Mountain bikes can be rented at the larger ski areas during the dry months, and hang-gliders are popular at the Soldeu-El Tarter ski area.
Andorra la Vella, the capital city, is almost entirely dedicated to the retailing of duty free electronics and luxury goods. Beyond the ski resort towns, there are just a handful of Romanesque churches and a few simple but elegant stone bridges.
The official language of Andorra is Catalan, a romance language. Local lore has it that everyone in Andorra speaks Catalan, Spanish and French, but there are plenty of people who can't understand more than 10 words of French and you’ll find hardly anyone speaks English.
Andorran cuisine is mainly Catalan, with strong French and Italian influences. Pasta is common and sauces are typically served with meat and fish. Local dishes to try include cunillo (rabbit cooked in tomato sauce), xai (roast lamb), trinxat (bacon, potatoes and cabbage) and escudella (a stew of chicken, sausage and meatballs).
